Vera Cubero

Vera is currently the Emerging Technologies Consultant for the NC Department of Public Instruction. She brings a wide range of experience in K12 education at the school, district, and state levels and a passion for responsible AI implementation and promoting AI Literacy for all students and staff. In this statewide leadership role, she leads North Carolina's AI implementation and was instrumental in publishing North Carolina’s AI Guidelines, a comprehensive guidebook for education leaders (go.ncdpi.gov/AI_Guidelines). She is also honored to have been named ASU/GSV 2025 Top 100 Women in AI, to serve on Governor Stein’s AI Leadership Council, the Southern Regional Education Board's Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Education, EdSafe Alliance State AI Policy Lab, and was an EdSafe Alliance AI Catalyst Fellow in 2024. She will be retiring this spring after almost 30 years in public education and beginning another journey as an independent consultant with Cubero Consulting. When she is not obsessing over AI, you can find her in her greenhouse or garden, tending to thousands of plants.
